But where'd they get that name? What's a Tulalip? It doesn't really matter because, after all, what's in a name? What was a "google" before the new millennium kicked in? Or a tweet for that matter?
The supposedly "accidental" reveal has plenty of tongues wagging on-line because of an article on Social Barrel that reports how the Tulalip secret was stumbled upon.
A site labeled socl.com was discovered on Thursday which clicked into a mock-up board for what looked like Microsoft's design theme. Fake buttons and some generic text tipped off the lucky stumbler who happened upon it. (A person not identified as of yet.)
A few hours later, a different board popped up with the message:
Socl.com is an internal design project from a team in Microsoft Research which was mistakenly published to the web.
We didn't mean to, honest.
Very cagey. If Microsoft were going to launch a new Social Networking Site to compete, maybe the best way would be to "accidentally" leak it to the web. That makes the buzz irresistible. And it plays into the image of MS somehow always fumbling the ball at the goal line—then stealing the game just as the clock winds down.Brilliant.
